Help and Caring for the Caregiver

Many of us know someone who is a home caregiver and while we’d like to help, we simply don’t know what to do.  Sadly for the home caregiver, many of us simply don’t do anything to help and the caregiver’s burdens continue to mount.  It doesn’t have to be that way though.  There are plenty of things you can do to lend a helping hand and ease the home caregiver’s load.

Perhaps you wouldn’t feel comfortable actually caring for the person the home caregiver is providing care for but there are still a wide variety of ways in which you can offer your assistance.  Maybe you could prepare a meal once a month for the caregiver and her family.  Or maybe you could babysit for the caregiver’s children so she could enjoy an afternoon or evening to herself.  Maybe you could even offer some assistance by running errands or doing household chores for the home caregiver.  If you do feel comfortable and are qualified to assist with direct care, just sitting with the caregiver’s loved one for a couple of hours now and then would offer a tremendous relief to the caregiver and allow her to recharge her batteries.

Often, we fall into the trap of saying, “Call me if you need anything,” and when someone doesn’t call we wrongfully assume there is nothing we can do to help out.  As you can see from the examples above though, there is something almost anyone can do to ease the tremendous burdens of a caregiver.  Examine your situation and that of a home caregiver you know and look for areas in which you can be of service.  Your friend or loved one will appreciate it!
