What Home Care Services Will Help You as the Primary Caregiver

Are you the primary caregiver for a loved one and are you finding it too demanding or difficult to do alone anymore? Perhaps you should now consider getting some relief by looking into home care services that can ease your burden and your mind. It is never easy to have the entire burden of home health care placed solely on you. There are really two types of in home care. One is home health care, which is medically based and centered on physical therapy, nursing, nutrition or respiratory therapy. There is also non-medical home care which is centered on everyday living tasks or companionship. The medical type of home health care is of course more expensive since the providers have to be educated and certified in most cases. If you do not need this type of help than there are lower cost options for you to consider, some of which are covered by Medicare or other insurance.

As for non-medical home care there are two areas you can focus on. One is to hire a person to be a companion to your loved one for part of the day or full days. This person can engage your loved one in conversation, take walks with them or work on puzzles together. This is ideal if you feel guilty leaving your loved one home alone all day, because you are working or if they really shouldn’t be home alone all day. You, as the primary caregiver, may have a lot on your plate and not be available to keep your loved one company a lot. Non-medical home care can also focus on housekeeping. You may hire someone to do tasks such as cooking or cleaning, so that you can spend more quality social time with your aged parent or loved one.

Non-medical type home care workers can be hired either on your own through classified ads or friends or you can use an agency to find one. If you go through classified ads to find your provider then make sure you do or have done a thorough background check to ensure the person you are hiring to come into the home has a good track record and is trustworthy. Make sure they have references that you can contact also.

Home care professionals can be hired to be in your home for a few hours at a time to weeks at a time. Hiring them for full days will ensure that yours is the only home they are working in. Home care employees can also be hired to live with an elderly person or couple. This can be a benefit to both parties. The employee benefits by not having to rent an apartment or travel to work and the elderly person or couple benefit by having their caregiver there all the time. If you have this type of arrangement make sure the caregiver doesn’t abuse their privileges. You will need to make a working schedule for them so you know things are getting done. Even when the in home caregiver is not on working duty it is a comfort for an elderly person to know they are around in case they should fall or need some help. Many times the primary caregiver is nearly as old as the person they are taking care of. Having a younger caregiver living with you can be of great comfort.

In addition to these standard options for full and part-time home care givers, there is the option of respite care. Respite care is a type of in-home care where the respite caregiver is responsible 24 hours a day. This can go on for a day or for a period of time, for example if the primary caregiver becomes ill and cannot take care of their loved one for a few days while they get better or perhaps the primary caregiver has to go out of town for a few days. Respite care is an option that offers constant care, the same as a spouse or child offers in-home care.

Check out these and maybe some other options if you are a primary in-home caregiver and you just don’t seem to have enough time on your hands to get things done and also take care of your own life. It is a noble thing to be a hard worker but you may try to work smarter also. Don’t rule out all the possibilities.
